Like some of its competitors, the Ram truck line offers different bed sizes to suit the needs and wants of its different customers. Traditionally, bed size names describe the overall bed length. For Ram trucks, these bed lengths are as follows:

- 6 feet, 4 inches
- 8 feet

For the Ram truck line, the 5'7" truck bed comes exclusively as an option for the half-ton 1500 and 1500 Classic models. This "short" bed has the following dimensions:

What Engines Are Available In Ram Trucks?
When it comes to utility, the engine is possibly the largest determining factor for a pickup truck's performance. Of course, bed size, cabin configuration, drive type, transmission, and suspension all contribute as well. However, the engine largely dictates how much weight a truck can carry or pull.
Below are the different engines powering the current-generation (2019 to present) Ram trucks.
3.6-L Pentastar 24V V6 VVT eTorque
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 has served as the Ram 1500's base engine since 2013. Although a bit dated, this gasoline V6 engine is still a viable option. Over the years, Ram improved this mill's performance, and currently, it produces 305 h.p. and 269 lb.-ft. of torque.
For even better efficiency and performance, Ram also upgraded the Pentastar V6 with the carmaker's eTorque technology, which is a mild hybrid system.
Ram's eTorque employs a 48-volt electric motor to improve fuel economy as well as increase the vehicle's towing and payload capacities. This technology also provides some bonuses to the truck's handling characteristics.
In its latest iteration, the eTorque variant of the Pentastar V6 engine provides the Ram 1500 with a maximum towing capacity of 7,730 pounds. This engine is also at the heart of the 1500 Tradesman trim's maximum payload capacity of 2,300 pounds.
3.0-L EcoDiesel V6
Ram's 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel is a relatively small engine, yet it delivers a lot of grunt at very economical fuel consumption.
At engine speeds as low as 1,600 RPM, this turbocharged diesel engine can already provide Ram 1500 owners its 480 lb.-ft. maximum torque output.
The EcoDiesel V6 engine delivers a respectable 260 h.p. when needed. However, when driving normally, this thrifty powerplant can also let the Ram 1500 travel an impressive 26 miles per gallon (combined fuel economy rating).
Using the proper towing equipment, a 5th generation RAM 1500 with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 can tow a maximum of 12,560 pounds. Moreover, this diesel mill helps the Ram 1500 haul a maximum of 2,090 pounds of payload.
5.7-L HEMI MDS V8 VVT
The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is one of the more powerful Ram 1500 engine options. This V8 powerplant can produce 395 h.p. and 410 lb.-ft of torque.
For the 5th-generation Ram 1500, the standard 5.7-liter HEMI V8 can provide 11,590 pounds of towing capacity and 1,930 pounds of maximum payload.
Like with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, Ram also added a HEMI engine variant with eTorque technology. Although this 5.7-liter eTorque engine produces the same horsepower and torque output as the standard HEMI version, the eTorque system increases the truck's towing, hauling, and fuel efficiency numbers.
With the 5.7-liter HEMI eTorque engine, the Ram 1500 can tow a maximum trailer weight of 12,750 pounds. This mild hybrid HEMI also gives the full-size truck a payload rating of 1,860 pounds.
6.2-L Supercharged HEMI SRT V8
Exclusively powering the trail-ready Ram 1500 TRX trim is the 6.2-liter, twin-screw supercharged HEMI V8 engine. This HEMI, which is the biggest and most potent engine in any Ram 1500 trim, delivers a staggering 702 h.p. and an amazing torque output of 650 lb.-ft.
Despite the 6.2-liter HEMI's power, the TRX's off-road tuning and construction limit the truck's towing and payload capacities to 8,100 pounds and 1,310 pounds, respectively.
6.4-L HEMI V8
The venerable 6.4-liter HEMI 392 engine comes as the entry-level engine option for the Ram 2500 and 3500 models. With a power output of 410 h.p. and a maximum torque output of 429 lb.-ft., this gasoline-powered V8 engine has more than enough grunt to power both the 3/4-ton and 1-ton models.
The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 can provide the Ram 2500 with 17,740 pounds of maximum towing capacity. Using the same engine, the sturdier Ram 3500 can pull slightly more trailer weight, up to 18,210 pounds.
6.7-L I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel
The legendary 6.7-liter inline-6 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine provides hard-working 2500 and 3500 Ram trucks with 370 h.p. and 850 lb.-ft. of torque.
With this kind of power under the hood, properly-equipped Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks can achieve tow ratings of 20,000 pounds and 22,660 pounds, respectively.
Unlike the Pentastar and the HEMI engines, however, the 6.7-liter turbo diesel did not get an eTorque-equipped variant. Instead, Ram and Cummins tuned the 6-cylinder powerplant and mated it to the renowned Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission to deliver the best heavy-duty performance.
This new 6.7-liter Cummins "high-output" (H.O.) engine produces significantly more power (420 h.p.) as well as torque (1,075 lb.-ft.) compared to the standard Cummins engine.
Using the Cummins H.O. engine mated to the Aisin transmission, the current Ram 3500 can achieve a class-leading towing capacity of 37,090 pounds. This Cummins version also allows the Ram 3500 to haul 6,570 pounds of payload.
