How Are Ford Truck Beds Measured?

overhead view of new Ford truck bed liner

Because truck beds mainly carry cargo, we measure them using the inner box dimensions. In principle, we want to find out the maximum cargo size that we can fit inside the bed. If the truck bed comes with a protective bedliner, then we also have to take the bedliner's thickness out of the bed's usable space.

First, bed length measurement runs from the inner bulkhead up to the inner part of a closed tailgate. The bulkhead is the side of the bed closest to the truck's cabin.

Second, bed width is often the measurement between the inner wheel wells or wheel housings. These wheel wells protrude inside the cargo box, therefore decreasing the maximum width of some floor sections by approximately 15 to 20 inches.

Finally, bed height represents the distance from the bed floor up to the top of the tailgate.

How Long Is F-150 Bed With Tailgate Down?

With the tailgate down, you can increase your F-150's usable bed length by approximately 20 inches, or the height of the tailgate itself. Some F-150 owners and enthusiasts lower their tailgates when hauling to accommodate longer cargo like timber, steel pipes, and even small recreational vehicles.

How Much Weight Can My Ford F150 Carry?

The Ford F-150's maximum payload capacity of 3,325 pounds beats that of any other full-size truck in the market. Of course, not all F-150s have the same payload rating. Although the drive configuration and bed size affect this rating, the engine type largely determines how much the F-150 can carry.

For the past three F-150 generations, the 5.0-liter V8 engine option offers the highest payload capacity with the right configuration and payload package. Ford's Heavy-Duty Payload Package includes upgraded tires, wheels, and suspension components.

Here are the published maximum payload capacities of the past three F-150 generations.

14th generation F-150 (2021- present)

  • 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6 - 1,965 pounds

Will A Golf Cart Fit In An F150?

If you're an avid golfer who likes to bring your clubs and even your own golf cart to different golf courses, then a full-size truck may be a good fit for you. Of course, we have to qualify this statement with another question: How big is the golf cart?

Although different golf cart brands have different design concepts, they usually use similar dimensions for their products.

Mini golf carts are the newest and smallest members of this vehicle category. These tiny golf carts can be as small as 50 inches in length and 32 inches in width.

Check out this comparison between mini and standard golf carts.

Standard golf carts, on the other hand, have the following average dimensions :

Two-seater Golf Cart

  • Overall Length - 92 in.
  • Wheelbase length - 66 in.
  • Overall Width - 40 in.
  • Overall Height - 70 to 80 in.

Four-seater Golf Cart

  • Overall Length - 110 in.
  • Wheelbase Length - 80 in.
  • Overall Width - 48 in.
  • Overall Height - 70 to 80 in.

Six-seater Golf Cart

  • Overall Length - 144 in.
  • Wheelbase length - 97 in.
  • Overall Width - 48 in.
  • Overall Height - 70 to 80 in.

Based on these measurements, you can fit a mini golf cart in a 5.5-foot F-150 bed even with the tailgate closed.

A standard two-seater golf cart can fit either in a 6.5-foot bed with the tailgate down, or in an 8-foot bed with the tailgate closed.

Additionally, a standard four-seater golf cart can fit in an 8-foot bed with the tailgate open.

Unfortunately, although a standard six-seater golf cart may theoretically fit in an 8-foot bed with the tailgate open, it may not be safe anymore.

How Much Weight Can A Ford F150 Safely Tow?

The 2022 Ford F-150 has several towing capacities corresponding to trim levels and drive configuration. Similar to the F-150's payload capacity, the tow rating largely depends on the truck's engine type.

  • 3.3-L Ti-VCT V6 - 8,200 pounds
  • 3.5-L EcoBoost H.O. V6 - 8,200 pounds
  • 2.7-L EcoBoost V6 - 10,100 pounds
  • 3.5-L PoweBoost Full Hybrid V6 - 12,700 pounds
  • 5.0-L Ti-VCT V8 - 13,000 pounds
  • 3.5-L EcoBoost V6 - 14,000 pounds

For example, to achieve the 14,000-pound maximum towing capacity, you will need to get the following truck configuration and options:

  • 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine
  • SuperCab or SuperCrew 4x2 configurations
  • Max Trailer Tow Package
