How Much Can A Honda Ridgeline Safely Tow?

For unbraked towing, it is best to stay under 1,000 pounds for safety as well as legal purposes.
What Kind Of Engine Does A Honda Ridgeline Have?
The 2022 Honda Ridgeline shares the same 3.5-liter V6 SOHC i-VTEC gasoline engine that powers its SUV brothers, the Pilot and the Passport. This powerplant connects to a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and shift-by-wire technology.

What Is The Benefit Of The i-VTM4 System?
The Honda i-VTM4 is a leading-edge AWD system that uses torque vectoring to direct power to the rear wheels. This revolutionary AWD system debuted in 2015 with the introduction of the third-generation Pilot. Eventually, i-VTM4 became available in the Passport and the Ridgeline.
The Honda iVTM-4 system is the product of the convergence of two other technologies from the same automaker: the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) and the variable torque management 4-wheel-drive (VTM-4) system.
The VTM-4 system managed power automatically between the front and rear wheels. In turn, the ATTS allocated the power between wheels rotating on the same axle. Together, the ATTS and the VTM-4 systems comprised the framework for today's modern torque vectoring.
What Is i-VTM4 Torque Vectoring?
Honda's i-VTM4 system is mechanically similar to another AWD system from Honda's luxury brand, Acura. This is the Acura Super Handling AWD (SH-AWD) system, which is the first active torque vectoring-equipped AWD system in the world.
The iVTM-4 system can divert up to 70% of the 3.5-liter V6 engine's torque to the vehicle's rear wheels. In turn, the active torque vectoring component can allocate up to 100% of that rear-diverted torque to the left or the right wheel.
So how does the system give Honda owners a benefit over other non-torque vectoring AWD systems? There are two good scenarios that can illustrate this.
First, during off-road driving, the iVTM-4 system can help you get your Ridgeline out of a ditch - literally. Even if only one of your truck's rear wheels has sufficient ground traction, the iVTM-4 system can deliver 70% of your engine's torque output to that wheel.
With enough traction and good technique, even one driven rear wheel can get your Ridgeline out of a pit.
Secondly, the Honda i-VTM4 system also improves vehicle steering and overall handling during high-speed driving and inclement weather.
